Crew 101: Gear Guide

Rowing looks simple on the water, yet athletes need the right clothing and gear to perform well, stay safe, and stay comfortable in all conditions. At EGR Crew, boats and oars are provided by the program. Families equip their athletes with personal gear.

Core Practice Gear (Required)

Every rower needs the basics for daily practice:

  • Water bottle — A large refillable bottle. Hydration is essential on the water and on the erg.
  • Athletic shoes — Good running shoes for warm-ups, land workouts, and erg training.
  • Fitted athletic clothing — Snug layers that won’t catch on the sliding seat or oar handles. Think compression shorts, leggings, or tech-fabric tops. Avoid loose basketball shorts or baggy sweatshirts.
  • Weather layers — Base layer, fleece or synthetic mid-layer, and a lightweight rain or wind jacket. Cotton is discouraged because it stays wet and cold.

Competition Gear

When athletes begin racing, they will need specific items:

  • Team unisuit or racing top/bottom — Required for competition. Ordered through the team each season.
  • Team outerwear — Optional warm-up jacket or tech layer, often available through seasonal gear orders. Helpful for team identity at regattas.

Nice-to-Have Extras

  • Gloves or pogies — Helpful in cold conditions while maintaining grip.
  • Waterproof bag — Keeps clothes and electronics dry at practice and regattas.
  • Towel and spare clothing — Useful after splash or rain.
  • Sunglasses and hat/visor — Reduces glare during sunny sessions.
  • Sunscreen and bug spray — Spring and summer essentials.

What Parents Should Bring to Regattas

Regattas are long outdoor days with variable weather. The food tent takes care of athletes. Parents should consider bringing:

  • A folding chair
  • Layers for changing weather
  • Comfortable shoes that handle mud or wet grass
  • Snacks, drinks, or a small cooler

Uniform and Gear Orders

The team coordinates gear orders for unisuits and optional apparel at the start of each season. Ordering instructions arrive through the newsletter. Used gear is often available from graduating athletes or in parent swap groups.

Quick FAQ

Does my rower need special rowing shoes?
No. Shoes are built into the boat. Athletes wear socks or go barefoot in the shell.

What happens if we forget water or gear?
Coaches expect athletes to come prepared. Bring a water bottle every day. If an item is forgotten, the athlete may have to sit out.

Do novices need a unisuit right away?
No. Coaches will let parents know when it’s time to order team uniforms. Early practices can be done in standard athletic wear.
